Illness and dying cannot be fully encompassed by the problem-based model of medicine. Beyond symptoms and suffering, dying is a profound personal experience for the individual as well as for his or her family. The concept of “personhood” and the conceptual framework of human development will be presented as tools for understanding the nature of suffering and nature of opportunity associated with the time of human life we call “dying.”

Ira Byock, M.D., FAAHPM is a leading palliative care physician, author, and public advocate for improving care through the end of life. He is founder and chief medical officer of the Institute for Human Caring at Providence St. Joseph Health. Author of Dying Well and The Best Care Possible.
